Martyn Smith's Story

Rev Martyn Smith

Martyn is our Minister whom we share with the three other Methodist Churches in the Circuit.

Personal Story

Although born in Surrey, 2 year old Martyn moved with his parents to North Staffordshire where his father was taking up an appointment as an Anglican Rector, a role that he had until retirement, thirty years later! With his school studies complete, Martyn trained to be a teacher at St. Luke’s College, Exeter, where he helped to lead a flourishing Christian Union. His first teaching job was at a North Devon boarding school for teenage boys with emotional and behavioural problems. He spent twenty years there as a full time teacher and part-time member of the care staff with responsibility for several sports.

Having felt God’s call to offer himself, initially as a Local Preacher and subsequently for ministerial training with the Methodist Church, Martyn completed the 3-year training course and had his first appointment in 1997 as the assistant minister in the Saltash Circuit. Following a ten year stay there, he then became the Callington & Gunnislake Circuit Superintendent Minister, with pastoral responsibility for four congregations. It has been agreed that he will stay until August, 2019.

Hobbies/ Interests

Martyn enjoys spending time with his wife Valerie, visiting National Trust properties and ‘catching up’ with their children, grandchildren and friends. He would list steam railways, photography, history and following most sports among his other interests.

Christian Commitment

Martyn made a personal Christian commitment as a ten year old youngster at a church youth club event, following a particularly challenging epilogue.

The Difference God has Made

As a Christian over the years, Martyn has always appreciated the peace of mind that God gives through His Love, Forgiveness and Guidance … and the sense of purpose which comes from knowing that we can please God and make a positive difference to the lives of others, with His Help.

Favourite Bible Verse

As a Christian and a football fan, Martyn has always appreciated the application and meanings of this Verse (2 Corinthians 5: 9):

So whether we are at home or away,

we make it our aim to please Him. {RSV}
